How To Find Cheap Car Rental, Hotels And Airfare

Writer: Morten Elm on February 8, 2011 Hotel No Comments

Do not just cross your fingers and hope for the best, when it comes to finding a good travel deal. Instead do a lot of research, so you are sure to get value for your hard-earned money when going on vacation.

If you book well in advance you have a lot of time to take a close look at the hotel prices and airfare; and make relevant changes. When you are searching for a long time, you have time to find the good deals.

Look on the internet to find the best travel deals. Finding prices online is one of the most valuable and cost-cutting methods to get the best travel deals. And it is not enough just to check the website that claims to have the best deal. Compare the prices from several websites to get the best travel deal.

If you’re a generally a spur-of-the-moment type person, always be sure to check for last minute deals on flights that still have empty seats a few hours before boarding. This could cut costs by a lot since airlines want your business.

When you find a vacation that looks like a good deal always check that taxes and all applicable fees are included. If they aren’t it can cost you a lot of extra money; and make the deal not that good.

When you are offered a rate for a hotel or an airfare, do not just accept it. Instead ask if you can get a special rate that you might qualify for; like special rates for seniors, military or corporate.

Selecting a hotel just outside the major city you’re visiting tends to be cheaper as well; which allows for a better travel deal. Ask for an upgrade to a suite because many companies will do it for free if the room is empty.

An easy way to get a good travel deal on a rental car is to ask for an upgrade. It is also often cheaper to rent a car on the internet, and a full week rental will often be cheaper than the daily rate. Remember always to check for extra taxes on the rate that you are offered.

Check if your auto-insurance covers if you are involved in an accident in your rental car. Also make sure to make a note of any stains, scratches, dents and or other damages before you leave the lot. There is no reason why you should pay the bill for someone else’s lack of care.

When you have arrived to your destination, you can still save some money. Eat at the local restaurants and walk to them, so you can save the cab cost. It will actually also make you feel better and give you the energy to enjoy the local scenery.

Five steps to maximize your hotel’s social media results

Writer: Alun Hill MCIJ, Editor on February 2, 2011 Hotel No Comments

Social is no longer something that can be ignored. And while it might not be perfect for every hotel, it is an important option for most. There are a number of benefits, including the rise in social media’s footprint in natural search results that can be taken advantage of with a little bit of effort and ingenuity.

1. Put your on-staff experts to work. Many hotels have a tremendous advantage in social media. People on their staff have a duty to be experts in certain subjects. Your concierge is an expert on your hotel’s surroundings. Your chef is a food expert. Your gardener’s job is to make things grow. Your decorator’s job is to make the environment warm and beautiful. People want to know about what they know! There are entire TV networks dedicated to this stuff. If you can get them to write a few sentences every month, you’ve got yourself some tremendous social media fodder.

2. More social media only offers. Social media specific rate codes for your fans and followers still aren’t utilized to the extent that I think they should be. You want your social media following to think they’re getting something special from time to time. An extra 5 or 10% off on a room for certain periods can go a very long way. The discounts don’t need to be Groupon-level steep, but enough to show your biggest fans that you appreciate them.

3. Someone to really take a big foursquare/Facebook Places leap. We’ve seen plenty of specials that offer people glasses of wine, food, and rewards points, but we haven’t seen anyone go all out yet. Why not try to get some buzz and give away free rooms for a larger number of check-ins? Or why haven’t brands really taken to the services and linked check-ins across multiple locations for super-offers like major retailers have? We’d love to see that and I’m sure frequent customers would as well.

Will Google Take On Hotel Distribution?

Writer: Alun Hill MCIJ, Editor on February 1, 2011 Hotel No Comments

It’s enough to strike fear in the hearts of OTAs worldwide – if Google enters the hotel booking game, what will the resulting merchant landscape look like? Don’t worry about it too much because the scenario is not likely, according to industry experts.

Despite buzz surrounding Google’s pending acquisition of ITA Software, there are no signs that Google plans to become a hotel room retailer, according to industry participants. In fact, many think Google’s increased interest in travel-related search results could be a benefit, with an important exception being the online travel agencies.

To be clear, ITA processes flight information so the acquisition by Google in itself does not affect hotels directly. What is likely to happen, however, is OTAs will respond to the changes and that will in some way affect hotels, according to Tim Unwin, senior VP, product management for Pegasus Solutions.

Google will likely take the combined capabilities of ITA and its existing platforms to the hotel search and discovery process, according to Henry Harteveldt, VP & principal analyst, Airline & Travel Research, Forrester Research.

“Google wants to take advantage of ITA’s capabilities to understand (consumer search) intent,” he said.

Gogobot, the Facebook of the travel industry?

US-based online start-up Gogobot is promising to use social networking to shake up the world of user-generated travel reviews to end the reliance on the opinions of “anonymous strangers”.

This new company has been public for only two months but its unique blend of social networking and trip advice means it is already on the cutting edge of the travel sector.

The company uses customers’ friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter to make personal travel recommendations. Users who sign up have their travel questions posted on their social networks, and then their contacts can post answers.

This generates a trustworthy source of information for users to help plan their trip. Speaking to Travolution via Skype from the US, Travis Katz, founder and chief executive of Gogobot, said:
“Today, the way people are planning their trips or planning where they want to go to dinner is by getting advice from anonymous strangers on the internet.

“They are going to sites like Tripadvisor or Yelp and reading these anonymous reviews and they are doing this not because that’s the way they want to plan, they do it because that’s the only alternative.”

Why your social media strategy shouldn’t be owned by a PR or ad agency

For most companies the challenge is a cultural one, and an organisational one. Handing the social media reins to the best agency in the world, no matter what their discipline might be, is not going to help a firm to help itself in the long-run.Agencies can play a massively important role in helping to define a roadmap for social media success, but helping is very different to ‘owning’.

The responsibility for developing and managing social media needs to be borne in-house if a business seriously intends to realign its culture. And make no mistake: social media is a cultural and organisational challenge for most businesses of any scale. Only by embracing engagement and by becoming more open – both internally and externally – can a business transform how it is perceived in public (and in private: staff retention and satisfaction are hugely important).

The pace of change is going to be incredibly important for some businesses that are obviously struggling to adapt. Many long-established (and seemingly slow-moving) brands are trading on their former glories, and have been found out. Companies with rubbish service levels might not be around in a decade or so. Yes, it can be hard to adapt to the demands of the modern business environment, but paying an agency to manage social media isn’t going to help these companies to directly deal with the challenges that face them.

Besides, outsourcing the management of social media sends out the wrong message. Where’s the commitment to interaction, to customer-centricity, to empowering staff, to giving a shit? Unless a brand really commits to engagement then it will seem fake and hollow to people who tune into you via social media channels. It’s the difference between a journalist interviewing a CEO directly to unearth some answers, and talking to a PR rep.

It’s not just about driving and embracing participation, it is about the quality of interaction. The right people need to be involved. I believe that the right people are in-house employees.
